After installation of update KB2670838 Win 7 keeps crashing to blue screen.

I currently have laptop set to automatic download and installation of windows updates. Update KB2670838 causes system crash whenever Internet Explorer Version 9 is running. I restored the laptop to a previous date using system restore and again allowed the update to install again. Getting the same results as previous installation of the update. I uninstalled the update using Add/Remove programs and laptop seems stable.

I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit edition Serv pack 1 on HP DV7 laptop I7 processor and 16GB ram.

And therein lies the rub, my friend.

Allow me to quote the OP in this thread...

IOW, it would appear that Automatic Updates is downloading/installing KB2670838 (at least as long as AU's set to the default Automatic setting).

AU's set to Notify Only here so I was able to hide it before AU offered it.

[PS: Running Fix It 50202 in Aggressive mode will "flush" the Download folder.]

    Same problem. BSOD after critical update. Stops when uninstalled.

    Has anyone tried updating the graphics driver? We have had the same issue on several machines (all HP) and found that the graphics driver was not the latest. So far, the BSOD has stopped.

    HP Pavillion DV7-6100 quad-core notebook here and HP has not released an updated AMD 6770m GPU driver update in over a year. Basically there has been no GPU driver update from HP since I bought the notebook about 1.5 year ago.

    HP needs to get it together and provide up to date drivers for their switchable graphics laptops.

    Ton of people are also complaining about this because they can't upgrade to Windows 8 until HP provides the updated drivers.

    Maybe in the future before Microsoft releases automatic 'critical' updates it should check with the OEMs to ensure they are providing updates on their end.

    Tried, yes. Succeeded, no.

    My version of igpmd64.sys is 8.15.10.2291. The HP site lists 8.15.10.2476 (2012-04-12) as the current version. I tried to install from their download package sp55098.exe and repeatedly got the less-than-helpful message "The computer does not meat the minimum requirements for installing the software."

    I have not tried their support, but the computer is out of warranty.

    KB2670838, after this update, some HP and Dell notebooks are having Bluescreen

    and black bar on Internet Explorer on right of its window. When they click that black

    bar BSOD pops and shuts down computer.

    How to FIX:

    Open Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall Programs > View Installed Updates > Find

    and uninstall KB2670838 > Restart computer > Open Windows Update > Check for Updates > Under optional downloads find KB2670838 right click and HIDE it.

    That's it until Microsoft releases a permanent fix.

    Note: This update is having interference with onboardly manufactured AMD Graphics of mentioned notebook models.
