How to disable tap to click on trackpad for Windows 8?

I've had windows 8 for a while and disabling tap to click has become a priority for me but i cannot figure out how to do it. Its not the same as windows 7 or vista. When i am typing, sometimes my hand hits the pad on my laptop keyboard and it moves where i am typing and screws up everything. Please help, i want to disable the stupid Tap to click feature because i use a USB mouse.

No idea if you're still looking for the answer to this, but if anyone searches this question, hopefully they will find my answer!

Click on the little up arrow on the right hand side of your start menu (your open applications), right click on the little icon that looks like a touch pad (large rectangle on top of 2 smaller rectangles).  Select TouchPad properties.  Navigate to the Device Settings tab.  Select your touch pad device and click settings.  Select the "tapping" subcategory.  Unclick "enable tapping".

There, done.

i had the same problem, if you think you've tried everything (i thought id had as i just got a new laptop with windows 8, which takes some getting used to btw) i clicked the up arrow bottom right of the desktop next to the volume and network icons, and found an icon called ELAN pointing device (it looks like a grey box with 2 grey rectangles under it). i double clicked it and saw straight away the touchpad sensitivity setting. normally i wouldnt have commented about it but i have a feeling it will help alot of people out. just 30 mins ago i was on amazon and wanted to see the total cost of items in my basket inc delivery and before i got a chance to read anything the stupid touchpad sensitivity was so strong it hit the proceed with order button and the payment went through! luckily i was happy with the price in the end or i would have been so annoyed.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! My laptop just downloaded 8.1 without my permission and I got the clicking touchpad. It was driving me crazy. I was all over the place where I didn't want to be. The right click on the touchpad icon worked perfectly after almost an hour trying to do it thru the control panel!

Go to the control panel and change the View by: setting to Large Icons... you need the full screen to see the View by:

Go to mouse in control panel and its the last tab called ClickPad Settings: Click on Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.

    I've had this problem for a very long time when my previous driver started acting flaky and I was forced to load the latest one directly from Synaptics.  The replacement didn't allow any way to disable tap-to-click.  There used to be a "tray-tool" overlay where I could simply right+click and disable that option.

    I was getting so frustrated, I started searching for a way to toggle it off in the registry, but we know how dangerous that can be.  I started looking at all of the files that came with the latest driver and I ended up at \Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP.  I noticed there were several executable files there, so I started testing them.

    I've discovered that SynTPEnh (06-18-2009) is the overlay tool.  If you launch it, it'll give you the option of having it load once, or each time on start-up into the system tray.  Also, it may trigger another executable, SynTPHelper (02-25-2013) as they appear to be companion files.

    Long story short; it loaded into the system tray, then I was able to right+click and uncheck tap-to-click.  I realize that not all of you may have access to this file, but it's got to be there for SOME of you.

    FYI - my driver version is 16.3.15.1, so you could actually download the entire suite from Synaptics, unzip it and get those two files.  Good luck!

    P.S.  I'm on Windows 7, but this is also the Windows 8 software suite.
