How to disable tap to click on trackpad for Windows 8?

I've had windows 8 for a while and disabling tap to click has become a priority for me but i cannot figure out how to do it. Its not the same as windows 7 or vista. When i am typing, sometimes my hand hits the pad on my laptop keyboard and it moves where i am typing and screws up everything. Please help, i want to disable the stupid Tap to click feature because i use a USB mouse.

No idea if you're still looking for the answer to this, but if anyone searches this question, hopefully they will find my answer!

Click on the little up arrow on the right hand side of your start menu (your open applications), right click on the little icon that looks like a touch pad (large rectangle on top of 2 smaller rectangles). Select TouchPad properties. Navigate to the Device Settings tab. Select your touch pad device and click settings. Select the "tapping" subcategory. Unclick "enable tapping".

There, done.

i had the same problem, if you think you've tried everything (i thought id had as i just got a new laptop with windows 8, which takes some getting used to btw) i clicked the up arrow bottom right of the desktop next to the volume and network icons, and found an icon called ELAN pointing device (it looks like a grey box with 2 grey rectangles under it). i double clicked it and saw straight away the touchpad sensitivity setting. normally i wouldnt have commented about it but i have a feeling it will help alot of people out. just 30 mins ago i was on amazon and wanted to see the total cost of items in my basket inc delivery and before i got a chance to read anything the stupid touchpad sensitivity was so strong it hit the proceed with order button and the payment went through! luckily i was happy with the price in the end or i would have been so annoyed.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! My laptop just downloaded 8.1 without my permission and I got the clicking touchpad. It was driving me crazy. I was all over the place where I didn't want to be. The right click on the touchpad icon worked perfectly after almost an hour trying to do it thru the control panel!

Go to the control panel and change the View by: setting to Large Icons... you need the full screen to see the View by:

Go to mouse in control panel and its the last tab called ClickPad Settings: Click on Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.

I installed Win8 on multiple computers and find that "tap to click" is turned on by default. Win8 doesn't seem to have a built-in method to turn it off, it's usually 3rd party. Win8.1 does seem to have a built-in option. So here are my suggestions in the order I would try them to solve the issue.
1. Upgrade to 8.1 if you can (it also has other features that are helpful)
2. go to control panel and search for mouse, the touchpad driver may be integrated to the controls in which case you'll have a tab for touchpad (it maybe controlled there or have a link to take you to another window)
3. Look for an icon on the right side of your task bar (may have to click the arrow to show all icons because by default they aren't shown). Then righclick on the icon that looks like a tracerpad (rectangle with two small rectangles below it)
4. use file explorer to search for "Alps" or "Symantec" but make sure you check the box for "hidden files" or it may not come up. doubleclick to execute the file. I also save a shortcut to my desktop because many times windows upgrades override the settings and turn "tap to click" back on. with the shortcut on my desktop, i can easily access it again if it doesn't stay resident in the taskbar as an icon.
5. use file explorer to search for "touchpad" and see if you can find an application file. For instance, Dell has the "dell touchpad" and I believe some others also their own version of files. If you can't find anything try similar words like "tracerpad."
Once you have the icon on your taskbar, just rightclick and you may get the option to disable tap or an option to open a gestures menu.

Hope this helps someone. i know the "tap to click" drives me crazy.
