How to disable tap to click on trackpad for Windows 8?

I've had windows 8 for a while and disabling tap to click has become a priority for me but i cannot figure out how to do it. Its not the same as windows 7 or vista. When i am typing, sometimes my hand hits the pad on my laptop keyboard and it moves where i am typing and screws up everything. Please help, i want to disable the stupid Tap to click feature because i use a USB mouse.

No idea if you're still looking for the answer to this, but if anyone searches this question, hopefully they will find my answer!

Click on the little up arrow on the right hand side of your start menu (your open applications), right click on the little icon that looks like a touch pad (large rectangle on top of 2 smaller rectangles). Select TouchPad properties. Navigate to the Device Settings tab. Select your touch pad device and click settings. Select the "tapping" subcategory. Unclick "enable tapping".

There, done.

i had the same problem, if you think you've tried everything (i thought id had as i just got a new laptop with windows 8, which takes some getting used to btw) i clicked the up arrow bottom right of the desktop next to the volume and network icons, and found an icon called ELAN pointing device (it looks like a grey box with 2 grey rectangles under it). i double clicked it and saw straight away the touchpad sensitivity setting. normally i wouldnt have commented about it but i have a feeling it will help alot of people out. just 30 mins ago i was on amazon and wanted to see the total cost of items in my basket inc delivery and before i got a chance to read anything the stupid touchpad sensitivity was so strong it hit the proceed with order button and the payment went through! luckily i was happy with the price in the end or i would have been so annoyed.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! My laptop just downloaded 8.1 without my permission and I got the clicking touchpad. It was driving me crazy. I was all over the place where I didn't want to be. The right click on the touchpad icon worked perfectly after almost an hour trying to do it thru the control panel!

Go to the control panel and change the View by: setting to Large Icons... you need the full screen to see the View by:

Go to mouse in control panel and its the last tab called ClickPad Settings: Click on Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.

No idea if you're still looking for the answer to this, but if anyone searches this question, hopefully they will find my answer!

It would help if you specified which product you were offering this solution for. E.g. it doesn't help me with my Surface RT 2. There is still no support for toggling off any functions of its "screen cover" which is where its touchpad is.

In my case, I know that I have disabled the touchpad on my Surface RT 2. I'm just not sure how and I wish that I had a way of toggling it back on because having a more precise pointer device than my finger or one of those ridiculously bulky and imprecise capacitive pens would often be helpful. But only if it was easy to toggle back off again.

Oh. It's not as arcane as I had imagined, actually straightforward, just many steps, instead of being a "toggle". FWIW here are the steps to Enable the Disabled Touchpad.
1. Press Win-w and find and open Mouse (that is the only word in the item and it may not appear without scrolling the list)
2. In Mouse Properties tap on the Hardware tab
3. See Device status: This device is disabled: (Code 22)
4. Tap Properties
5. Tap (Administrator) Change settings
6. Tap Enable Device
7. See Device Problems Troubleshooting Wizard ask: "Do you want to enable this device?"
8. Tap Next
9. See Windows successfully enabled this device.
10. Tap Finish
11. Move your pointer via your Touchpad as proof that your "toggle" has succeeded.
So, for any Surface RT user who wants to disable the Touchpad in their "screen cover", the steps to reverse that result should be obvious. Perhaps the same steps or a simple variation of them will help any other Touchpad owner who does not have any UI support for their device.
