How to disable tap to click on trackpad for Windows 8?

I've had windows 8 for a while and disabling tap to click has become a priority for me but i cannot figure out how to do it. Its not the same as windows 7 or vista. When i am typing, sometimes my hand hits the pad on my laptop keyboard and it moves where i am typing and screws up everything. Please help, i want to disable the stupid Tap to click feature because i use a USB mouse.

No idea if you're still looking for the answer to this, but if anyone searches this question, hopefully they will find my answer!

Click on the little up arrow on the right hand side of your start menu (your open applications), right click on the little icon that looks like a touch pad (large rectangle on top of 2 smaller rectangles). Select TouchPad properties. Navigate to the Device Settings tab. Select your touch pad device and click settings. Select the "tapping" subcategory. Unclick "enable tapping".

There, done.

i had the same problem, if you think you've tried everything (i thought id had as i just got a new laptop with windows 8, which takes some getting used to btw) i clicked the up arrow bottom right of the desktop next to the volume and network icons, and found an icon called ELAN pointing device (it looks like a grey box with 2 grey rectangles under it). i double clicked it and saw straight away the touchpad sensitivity setting. normally i wouldnt have commented about it but i have a feeling it will help alot of people out. just 30 mins ago i was on amazon and wanted to see the total cost of items in my basket inc delivery and before i got a chance to read anything the stupid touchpad sensitivity was so strong it hit the proceed with order button and the payment went through! luckily i was happy with the price in the end or i would have been so annoyed.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! My laptop just downloaded 8.1 without my permission and I got the clicking touchpad. It was driving me crazy. I was all over the place where I didn't want to be. The right click on the touchpad icon worked perfectly after almost an hour trying to do it thru the control panel!

Go to the control panel and change the View by: setting to Large Icons... you need the full screen to see the View by:

Go to mouse in control panel and its the last tab called ClickPad Settings: Click on Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.

Dell xps12 touch pad frequently re actives itself but the option is still turned off?????

Sounds like you could be confusing two separate functions. E.g. Tap to Click might be a feature which allows the user to "tap" on the Touch pad anywhere and see the same effect that a normal Touch screen user would have by tapping on the screen in the location where the pointer happened to be at the time. However, some Touchpads no longer have buttons to support their mouse click emulation but just rely on the user tapping on the Touchpad where the buttons might be expected to be. Therefore, even though you may have disabled the feature which would allow you to tap anywhere on the Touch pad (i.e, "Tap to click") you might not have disabled the feature which allows you to generate a "Mouse click" according to which side of the touchpad you were tapping on near the bottom.

Why not just disable the thing entirely and get a real mouse to avoid these uncertainties and confusions? Alternatively, some manufacturers provide a feature which does allow its users to disable all Touchpad functionality with a temporary toggle, e.g. sometimes using one of the machine's Fn keys. However, that implementation is completely dependent on each particular machine. I don't know if "Dell xps12" is a sufficient description of your machine's model to allow anyone to try to help you find your user's manual and interpret it for you. Ask Dell?
