Rogue devices showing up on windows 8 network in file exporer.

Hi everyone,

When I connect to my wireless network (very secure and complex WPA2 password), I go to File Explorer and the click on the "Network" at the bottom left of the window.  There continues to be a wireless device or phone that shows detected on the network.  I have seen three different devices and mac addresses since logging on this morning.  I have also checked the router and there is no record of these mac id's or devices on the router.  Where would these be coming from?  This doesn't show on my Windows 7 machines.  And also, I do not own any of these phones that are appearing on the network.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi I am having the same problem which has been occurring for almost a year. This does not appear to be a wifi problem. When I disconnect my router from the internet but keep my wifi running then the bogus phones disappear. when I connect back to the internet within a few hours they reappear. Even when i connect via cable to the internet with WIfi switched off they still appear. This would explain the no IP.

    I would strongly disagree with those that say it is is not a security problem. Any unknown device that can write to my laptop or pc is a security problem. The fact that it was able to write its MAC address in the memory of my PC means that it has access in some form to my PC. It may be limited to just that but no one has come up with any valid explanation as to what is going on and this should be treated as a valid security threat. Those that are trying to say that it is not need to check out the facts. In my case, and it appears it be the same as everyone else it is not wifi but internet related

    Please see Provide details of rogue (unknown) devices in Network node of File Explorer. I created that just now. It is a suggestion for this problem. I would have explained the problem and suggested solution better but I used exactly 1000 characters of the 1000 characters we can provide. If someone wants to add clarification then please post a comment there. You can get to the suggestion using the Feedback Hub in Apps in the Windows 10 Start menu. Or maybe getting to it is different for you but you will find it.

    Please upvote the suggestion.

    One comment I think is relevant is to say that even if the devices are valid and innocent the inability to determine that is a security vulnerability. Something else I could not explain is that these devices are either tablets (computers) or smartphones. I will add those comments if no one else does.

    I tried to use Wireshark to get some information but I don't know enough to be successful with it. Without going into details, though, when I filtered using one of the MAC addresses I did see communications with our HP printer and that seems strange. Does anyone experiencing this problem not have a HP printer?

    Also, if we all post the information we get and if any of us get the same MAC address then that is essential proof that something is not right. So the following are the devices I have seen.
