Install Windows live mail on Windows 8.

Your choice entirely. But let me point out something that you perhaps
don't realize: Windows 8  has two interfaces; the Modern/Metro
Interface (which may be all you've looked at) and the traditional
Desktop Interface. You can use either one or both.
That traditional  Desktop Interface is almost identical to Windows 7's
interface; the biggest difference is that there is no Start Orb to
click to bring up the Start menu. But note that you can get the Start
Orb back by using one of several third-party programs, either free or
very inexpensive (Classic Shell at
http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ and Start8 at
http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/; my personal preference is
Start8, but they are both very good). 
And going from one interface to  the other is very easy; there are
several ways, but simply pressing the Windows key is perhaps the
easiest.

I use Windows 8, almost exclusively with the traditional desktop
interface, and with Start 8 installed. If you were to look at and use
my computer, you would have a hard time realizing that it's not
Windows 7.
And another new third-party program that I like and you might want is

And of course there is no reason to use the included e-mail program
with Windows 8 or with any other version. There are many other better
choices, some free and some for sale, some by Microsoft and some by

I hate the mail program on my new laptop, Windows 8.  How can I change the email program to Windows Live Mail as I use with Windows 7?

I could not get Windows Live Mail to work on my Windows 8 computer.  I searched the internet diligently trying to find out why it would not show the ribbon nor show a send or receive.  Even on the Microsoft Websites.  No good answers.  Out of frustration I un-installed the program (I had tried the repair function and it did not work either.)  When I deleted it I noticed in the control panel the name was Windows Live Essentials.

I went on a search for a mail program that would work with my Windows 8.  I found Windows Essentials 2012.  I found it in a search for Windows Live Mail for Windows 8.  I was thinking it was probably the same thing but I downloaded and installed it.  In my control panel it called it Windows Essentials 2012. Well, it works.  Not as good as I would like but Microsoft obviously does not listen to its customer because you can no longer just RECEIVE mail or can no long just SEND mail.  They have taken that function away.  I have Outlook 2010 and it hasNO SEND folderand in addition no just RECEIVE or no just SEND.   Something that you really need but it has so much other stuff in it that I suspect the average person does not need that it will drive you crazy trying to use it.  I know everybody hates change but OUTLOOK EXPRESS worked so well.  Has Microsoft not heard the phrase that "If it works don't fix it"!  ????

Thanks for sharing. I eventually installed Windows Live Essentials too. Windows Live Mail works well enough. The only real problem I have is that I didn't know that I wouldn't be able to Restore my mail folders from the image backup, I should have Exported them all. So all my history is lost.
