KB2821895 Windows 8 x64 Update 06.11.2013 problem

After this update “sfc /scannow” gets stuck at 100% for about 6-7 minutes, and afterwards reports that there are corrupted files that it cannot fix and asks for reboot.

The situation with “sfc/scannow” repeats after restart. I checked it with three different machines. There are a lot of errors in CBS.log file.

We’re aware of an issue impacting some Windows 8 customers trying to run the sfc /scannow command after installing KB2821895, where customers using the System File Checker receive an error message that there are corrupt files and that the system requires a restart to repair the files. 

To work around this issue:

·         Open an elevated command window

·         Run the command dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, and wait for this command to complete.

·         Run the sfc /scannow command again until the command completes and reports that there is no corruption. If you still get an error that there is corruption, you should contact technical support for further assistance as your system may have actual corruption.

    After I ran system file checker and did the restart, at the Restarting message screen,  it said something about one something was pending, pauses a moment then restarted.    I did sfc twice and at both of their restarts that same pending something delayed the restart a moment.    I assume it was the offending KB# tying to finish installing.   

     

    I did a   findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt 

    zipped and uploaded one to here;   http://sdrv.ms/12FXRd3  Very large but zipps to 3mb

     

    Dism is supposed to use Windows Update server for files it needs.   After that 2nd sfc failure I ran the DISM's and saw no pending something at the next Restart.   So I assume it fixed it correctly.

    I can confirm I have the same problem as others had explained. I'm using Windows 8 Pro x64 and did a fresh install. All windows updates are working except KB2821895. I no longer have the cbs.log file cause I've done a system restore. The Dism method as mentioned might fix it but I'm still waiting for Microsoft to fix the update/patch and an official answer.

    Considering other non - techie users who applied the KB2821895 might not noticed anything wrong until they do "sfc /scannow" in command prompt, I feel like this update is not working as intended. But, hopefully we can get an official answer /fix from Microsoft soon. Until then, best i can do is hide the update and create a restore point / disk image.

    BTW have tried the:

     sfc/scannow 

    ◦DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

    ◦DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    plus several different attempts at different System Restore points

    all to no avail.

    This has turned into an absolute nightmare for me. Since this update my Laptop appears to have created 5 x 60mg plus CBS.log files, all apparently filled with corrupt data. I have no Windows Update History in fact it states I have never performed an update & that information may have been moved to another locale. The whole (long) list has vanished. I have tried several times to do a System Restore but it fails each time due to corrupt files.

    I wish these updates were not released until they had been fully checked with Windows 8. Since it's launch here (UK) it has been one thing after another & yet never a problem on my W7 Desktop.

    Sorry guys not a comp genius here admittedly but I think having to spend several hours trying to get a machine back to the stage it was at before the helpful Update is a bit much.
