HIGH disk usage Windows 8 Pro

It's been about 4 days since I've had this issue. My computer was running really slow, so I checked the Task Manager and saw that a "System" process was running under the name "ntoskrnl.exe". I thought it was a virus or a rootkit. I ran Windows Defender and nothing was detected. I just did a clean install of my operating system last night, and I'm checking my processes and the same issue is persisting.

I have an HP Pavilion m7 1015-dx.

If the problem is persisting like I think it is, can this be a hardware issue?

    Same problem here on a brand new laptop.  No resolution after trying all the scanning, defragging and other suggestions from this and other online forums.

    Task manager shows "ntoskrnl.exe" as the disk hog, but doesn't have any further details.

    And yes, it happens constantly and often for hours, but - unfortunately - I can't find a pattern so it's even more difficult to narrow it down to any other event or program.

    It's absolutely maddening.

    I too am having the issue.  As I type this the letters slowly appear on the screen.

    It happens once a day so its making me think its definitely an indexing or virus scanning issue.  But could be totally wrong.

    One thing I wanted to ask everyone, do you have iTunes or Spotify installed?  The way these two apps store files is in a massive directory system.  Wondering if the indexing against that is causing issues?

    Just a quick comment:

    Ken, I simply find your answer, with its putting-down, lesson-giving  tone, totally inappropriate, especially for an MVP.

    Further more, other than carrying out the sense that the requestor is close to a dum idiot (this is not my opinion, I experience the same issue and I read his post as describing exactly what I am experiencing ... and how I would have described it myself), you absolutely do not provide a hint of a solution nor even a start path for doing further diagnosis.

    Bottom line : ZERO VALUE CONTRIBUTION

    Its a 100% disk usage problem in all Windows 8 Versions. In task manager programs like services and system.exe consumes .5-1 MB/s and shows a disk usage of 100% and make other running programs unresponsive.

    Its a major problem in windows 8 and still Microsoft is not doing anything regarding this!!

    Are we supposed to face this problem until the next release of Windows or is there any way to fix it permanently??

    I had the same problem.i used system resource monitor tool to detect which files are being accessed.the result: random files from where i am not accessing.it looks like system indexing s.t. or looking for viruses.my search indexing is off and im using Symantec endpoint Point Protection un- manged client.

    my hard disk usage goes to 20 to 100% and the priority seems to be high as the system gets really slow.for example it takes 3 secs to open a local disk.

    i had win 8 pro since its release time but the high disk usage problem occurs recently.

    win 8 pro wmc x64

    3gb ram

    amd turion 64 x2
