It's been about 4 days since I've had this issue. My computer was running really slow, so I checked the Task Manager and saw that a "System" process was running under the name "ntoskrnl.exe". I thought it was a virus or a rootkit. I ran Windows Defender and nothing was detected. I just did a clean install of my operating system last night, and I'm checking my processes and the same issue is persisting.
I have an HP Pavilion m7 1015-dx.
If the problem is persisting like I think it is, can this be a hardware issue?

For what it is worth, I tried all the other posts but what worked instantly for me was to stop the auto defrag "defragsvc".
It went from a constant 100% to 0% with nothing running. W 8.1. Now I will need to find out why defrag kept running for hours . ???
Just type CHKDSK.
Same problem here with high disk/ memory usage, especially when playing games. I've tried everything mentioned here and no luck. I'm on Windows 10 but had this problem previously on Windows 8.1 too.
I tried going to the Command Prompt (Admin) and typed CHKDSK /p and it told me "Invalid parameter - /p"

I was thinking the same thing. This should have been resolved with an update. it is frustrating to have my machine have to wait, and wait to just be able to open a web page. I'm seriously thinking of getting a Mac my next time around too.
After reading Funkmaster's note I found my way into these settings on Windows 10. Surprisingly under the selection of balanced or performance I'd found my original Dell recommended setting that the minimum that they recommended was 5% ! If you have a Dell those settings were never deleted only replaced.
