Well, finally found the solution after 3 days of research.

Credential Manager Service was disabled.

  1. Go to RUN (Win Key + R)
  2. Type services.msc
  3. Scroll down to Credential Mnager Service
  4. Right click and go to properties and change the StartUp type to Automatic
  5. Start the service

Now you should be able to change/create the pin. Reply back if problem persist.

Hi Jeff,

Sorry for late response.

From the above replies I understand that you tried all the suggestions mentioned in previous replies and none worked. This issue may occur due to Windows image corruption, if the Windows image is corrupted we can restore the Windows image using DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) tool. Follow the steps mentioned in the link below (under Resolution topic) and Check if it helps.

Hi Jason.  Glad you were able to get the PIN to work for you on your 4th attempt.  I tried it with my ASUS 6 or 8 times to no avail.  DARN!!!  Again, glad it worked for you!

Thanks for your post.  Maybe somebody from Microsoft will finally take notice and figure out what is going on with new and old systems not allowing the PIN sign-in method...  The difference for me was, I was using the PIN without a problem and then one day--boom, no longer able to sign in with the PIN.

    Have a great day/evening.

I had this same issue with my brand new Asus UX305, literally out of the box 30 minutes ago and no software installed other than Windows Updates. I was simply trying to add a PIN to the login step, something I've done on all my other machines.

Here's what's odd: it failed about four times back to back, then I read through this thread, tried it again...and it worked (!?!). So I'm not sure if there was some process running in the background that the laptop needed to catch up on (this is an 800mhz Core M CPU), or what.

But, clearly, if this is happening out of the box on a new laptop with NO new apps installed, Microsoft and Asus need to get together and figure this out. It shouldn't be happening.
