I have seem to inherited this focus issue as well. Will take reasonable close shots no problem, but long shots look like shit. The camera as already been replaced after the led light illuminated permanently even when switched off. Can't expect too much given where it's made I guess.
Lumia 1020 Camera Won't Hold Focus
When using my 1020, I hold the shutter button halfway down to let it autofocus. It proceeds to do so briefly, but as I push the button, it loses focus and results in blurry photos. The manual focus does a little better. If I tap to focus, I can usually get the focus I want after 10 or so tries. This issue comes up at any focal distance.
Is the camera broken?
Thanks.

2014-10-24T13:09:07+00:00 I bought Lumia 1020 about an year ago and I have exactly the same problem with focus. The manual focus hardly works, no matter at what distance the object is . And auto focus works sometimes only. MOst of my photos are thus blurred. I had an N8 earlier and the focus was not an issue with it. Lumia 1020 is supposed to be a more sophisticated camera!

2014-11-13T04:48:24+00:00 Having the same problem, I've had the Nokia Lumia 1020 for about a year now - has been taking beautiful pictures. Today the camera will not focus. I see the auto focus adjust past the point where the picture is in focus and then it shoots the picture blurry. Phone was not dropped or damaged.

2014-11-13T23:04:58+00:00 To update this - After more testing (I was in a loud gymnasium when I first had the problem) The camera is also making a mechanical whining (or high pitched grinding) noise when it's attempting to focus. It will come into focus for a second and then just before it takes the picture, it goes blurry and takes the pic.
AT&T informed me that the phone is no longer under warranty - I still have 1 year on my contract, guess I'll have to replace the phone (or buy a camera). Very frustrating, I was extremely pleased with the Lumia1020 but the main selling feature (and the thing I bragged about to others) was the clarity of the camera. Going to see if the insurance I pay for on the phone will cover a replacement. Disheartening.
