How about MS revising the warning to something like, "We could just post the error code so you spend the next hour or so searching for the significance of what it means. In fact, that is exactly what we're going to do. We are not about to fix it because we know that you don't have IE as your default browser. By letting you know that, we'd be admitting that we're sometimes really lazy and don't want to fix something that you could easily fix yourself by succumbing to the MS cult."

I don't know if anyone else has posted this as a reply, as there are 130 responses and I don't feel like leafing through each one. From what I can see, the general consensus is that you must set IE as your default browser, then Control Panel, then Homegroup, and then click on the option to see/print your password. Print it. Then, (again, according to what I see in some of the responses) you change your default browser back to whatever you prefer (IMHO ANYTHING but IE!!)

 I, too, couldn't print my Homegroup password. I use Firefox - have been for years, not changing. This is what I did:

Before doing anything, log off of, and turn off, all other computers in your network.

Click on the Window, lower left corner.

Click Control Panel

Click Homegroup

Run Homegroup troubleshooter.

When Troubleshooter is done, close it out. At this point, you should be presented with the option to start a New Homegroup.

Do so.

Again, you will not be able to print the password that you will be given because you are not (I hope) using IE. You can, however...

1. Write your new password down. I recommend that you do so. Then, leaving the password page open,
2. Click the Window, lower left corner.
3. Type the word "snip" which will give you a "Snipping Tool". Click "NEW" in the upper left corner of the Snip Tool.
4. Everything on the page will "gray out". Place the pointer at the upper left corner of what you want to print, click and hold, outline what you want to print, release the click you were holding... click on "File", click on "Print"... print away! Long, but effective.

I found this post the most helpful so far. I am in no way comfortable doing what I know must be done but this has helped me because DNA75C has taken the time and trouble to help those like me. Thank you again.

Once again I cannot understand why Microsoft Tech Support can't answer a simple question!  The OP asked a very straightforward question and without all of the static, Microsoft's answer is ultimately that you have to print the Homegroup password (that's what this error code translates to) in Internet Explorer.  You have to have Internet Explorer as your default browser.  Geez!  I am not going to get into the logic or fairness of THAT but just answer the questions asked for crying out loud! 

Solution?  When you get to the print password page, Print Screen (FN + PRTSC) and paste it into a document.  Then just print the document without having to change your default programs.
