Lately, the messaging app in Windows 8 has been malfunctioning. When I send an outgoing message, the original message pops up at the bottom like normal, but it is quickly followed by a duplicate of the same message directly underneath it. What's going on?

Just a note on the problem: The duplication only happens when the receiving Facebook client is on line, if the receiving client is not on line there is no duplication.
Hey, Beard, what do you mean by "receiving Facebook client"? We have have the option to turn it on/off? Can you explain a little bit more about that?
"Receiving Facebook Client" simply means "the person receiving the message", but more specifically referring to the app/software the person is using.
This is happening to me as well. Guess we'll just have to wait for some kind of patch.

From the tile application for messaging if you have added Facebook to your account those contacts will show on your contacts list. The messenger app will tell you whether the recipient is "on Line". If they are not on line you will get a message that the recipient is not on line but you can still message this person.
If the Facebook contact is "on-line" there will be an exact duplication of the message you send to this person appearing on the chat display about 1.5 seconds after the first one appears on screen. The client on the other end only sees one message the duplicate is not sent.
If the contact is not "on-line" on Facebook there is no duplication on the (my) screen. The message does go to the recipient and it is there when they log on to Facebook.
It's like Facebook servers are mirroring or reflecting the message back to MS when the client is available for chat
Oh, now I get it. Yeah, really strange. The worse part is that Microsoft don't "speak" or even "listen" to us directly. This kind of little bugs should be noticed by them just like the big ones, for example, the Windows 7 32-bit fail here in Brazil. Don't know if it got the same proportion there overseas, but here it was a scandal! A problem is only acknowledged when it harms the user. Again, as Microsoft said, Messaging is "just" a hub, so...
