I have the same problem on my Surface Pro. And the problem is not limited to the Messaging software but also appears in the Windows Mail.
No solution so far. Hope that MS will soon give a fix.

Lately, the messaging app in Windows 8 has been malfunctioning. When I send an outgoing message, the original message pops up at the bottom like normal, but it is quickly followed by a duplicate of the same message directly underneath it. What's going on?

2013-08-04T03:54:40+00:00 Ok. The solution has already been made by MS. In Windows 8.1, the messaging app is no longer available. So when you get the update this fall, the double messaging problem will be no more.
