Windows 8 Apps not downloading. All stuck on pending.

I just received a brand new Windows 8 laptop. Right out of the box, a bunch of apps want to update but they all get stuck on "pending" and will not download. I'm very disappointed at the lack of "out of the box" workability. How can I get these apps to update and download?

I found these steps on a different thread and gave them a try, and afterwards my updates downloaded and installed fine.  Forcing the update service to create a new SoftwareDistribution folder seemed to resolve the issue:

  1. Open an administrative command prompt (go to the Start screen, type "cmd", right-click on Command Prompt and hit "Run as administrator")
  2. Type the following four commands in the command prompt:
  3. net stop wuauserv

cd %systemroot%

ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv 4. Try to install updates again.

    I ran into the same problem the first time through, but I suspect the problem was that I had the ap update window open. Once I closed in it in the task manager I was able to rename the folder. I suspect rebooting and going into the command prompt as admin would have accomplished the same thing.

    Yep,windows 8 sucks.  It was installed on a laptop I just bought.  I too have wasted hours fiddling with it.  I'm thinking about putting windows 7 on it instead.

    Well, at least the first comment with the commands works to fix the app problem....

    Just a note to those who maybe having the same problem with their apps. I too was having this problem. However I found that the clean boot was the best way to go, it certainly worked for me and would recommend doing this before messing around with 'cmd'. Especially if you are not that well informed of its uses.
