How to get your Google Calendar events to show in the Calendar app in Windows 8

Thank you for your suggestion, but the app, winpim calendar, doesn't appear to solve the problem I described above.

...And from the reviews for the app, it appears it might not be ready for prime time yet anyway.

Complete rubbish! I don't want to switch to Outlook because my friends and I share each other's Google Calendars. And what good is "subscribing" to a calendar if you can't add anything?! This in itself is the exact reason why I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Windows Mail. Either add support for GCal, or allow Mail to be installed separately from Calendar and People.

Tried the instructions from help and imported a .ics file of my google calendar into outlook.com calendar. BUT - when I went into my calendar app I could not see the events from my google calendar.

If I go back into my Outlook calendar I can see them.

Tried to 'refresh' my calendar app, but of course they have not included something as useful as that function! Checked that I have my outlook.com account added to my calendar app and it is. Tried to re-add it, but it will not let me do that.

Before I ignore Calendar app as the useless piece of badly-written junk it probably is and remove it from my sight .... is there anyone out there who could suggest how to make this Sh**t work like a normal calendar?

Actually, this is your best bet. After going through multiple contortions, I ended up just putting a browser link to my Google calendar on the "Metro" UI. After Win 8.1, I ceased using Metro at all, just booting to the desktop which has worked well for 20+ years.

Outlook continues to be excessively cumbersome and user-unfriendly; unfortunately, Google's apps have been getting worse and worse lately...
