How to solve, "Reboot and Select proper Boot device"

This keeps showing up when I turn on my computer and I cannot resume.

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

This shows up again after I press a key.

This happened when I connected the master plug part of the ATA Cable to my hard disk because I saw that it was connected to the slave part of the ATA Cable. I din't meddle with the jump block because I didn't know what to do to this.

When I open my computer I saw this problem.

I connected back the slave part of the ATA of my hard disk to see if I undo the problem but when I open my computer, still this problem shows up.

What can I do. My HDD is Hitachi, 80GB, 7200RPM and this is only one HDD in my computer.

I also have a question.

What is a Slave and a Master Drive?

What's their difference?

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft community.

I understand that whenever you start the computer you see the message “"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

Usually this error message occurs if in the BIOS, booting is set as to start from CD Rom or floppy drive as first boot device. Where as you are trying to boot from the Hard disk.

Go into BIOS and change the Drive Boot Order so that the Hard Drive comes first as a boot priority. You should be able to boot into Windows normally after you save it to that configuration.

Note: Modifying BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

For help with the BIOS settings, refer to the computer manual or contact the manufacturer.

I followed ALL the instructions multiple times. It's saying I have no hard disk drive to reboot from. When I press on "Hard Disk Drive Priority" it then says "1st Drive : not installed". Therefore, when I choose to reboot from the Hard disk drive, it doesnt work. I've had this computer for a few years and I've never had this issue. Does that mean my computer is broken/erased?

Hi There.

I have this same problem and I thanks for all the information that I used to read and try to solve my Computer. but the best thing that I do was I hook the internal drive and connect it on the other working PC.. I was about to reformat it base on the instruction that I have read but when I turn it ON, the good working PC recognized the drive and It works simultaneously. Thats it. !!! Just try what I do. Maybe it can help.

I am experiencing the same issue after changing the settings in Bios.

Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device.

Now I am unable to go back to Bios

Any help is appreciated. I have Gateway All-in -one with windows 7 premium edition.
