How to solve, "Reboot and Select proper Boot device"

This keeps showing up when I turn on my computer and I cannot resume.

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

This shows up again after I press a key.

This happened when I connected the master plug part of the ATA Cable to my hard disk because I saw that it was connected to the slave part of the ATA Cable. I din't meddle with the jump block because I didn't know what to do to this.

When I open my computer I saw this problem.

I connected back the slave part of the ATA of my hard disk to see if I undo the problem but when I open my computer, still this problem shows up.

What can I do. My HDD is Hitachi, 80GB, 7200RPM and this is only one HDD in my computer.

I also have a question.

What is a Slave and a Master Drive?

What's their difference?

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft community.

I understand that whenever you start the computer you see the message “"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

Usually this error message occurs if in the BIOS, booting is set as to start from CD Rom or floppy drive as first boot device. Where as you are trying to boot from the Hard disk.

Go into BIOS and change the Drive Boot Order so that the Hard Drive comes first as a boot priority. You should be able to boot into Windows normally after you save it to that configuration.

Note: Modifying BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

For help with the BIOS settings, refer to the computer manual or contact the manufacturer.

I hope that you tried to follow suggestion provided in the previous post.

If it does not help, I would suggest you to contact your motherboard's manufacturer for further assistance.

It's times like this that we have a wake up call about having current backups.

Then the panic does not set in.

Its unlikely that you will affect the data at the BIOS level. If you cannot get in you cannot break anything.

Power off the unit fully and hold down the F2 key and continue holding it down as you power up and then the BIOS window should open.

The boot drive normally is the C: drive.

Search Google 'Access BIOS on DELL' for specifics of the hardware.

at first i had an error code saying something like 0x00014ff or something like that. and then i reset my desktop a few times then it said repairing hard disk errors and then my pc worked. now when i use it it says reboot and select proper boot device. i cant access the bios. when i press esc, delete, f12 ,f2 it doesnt do anything. all it does is just make the reboot and select proper boot device text spam and pop up more on my black screen. i have a dell windows 8 dell desktop with windows 8 preinstalled please help. and a question if i change my BIOS, will it possibly damage my computer because i have very important things on the computer that's not backed up. please help. im not experienced and ignorant with computers.

Regarding this boot error message as it relates to Windows 10...

"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

I had the same problem that took some time to understand. This was local to my PC only.

This is a reboot problem that also may be experienced also on a wake from sleep/hibernate e.t.c as well as initial boot.

The OS in my case is Win 10 and I do not remember having the problem with Win 7.

In all cases for me after the error message (blue screen then text message) the hard reboot usually booted OK albeit fairly slowly.

I will also add that the sequence of drives listed in 'Disk Management' had the boot drive as the last entry not the first.

(This is a SATA reporting matter.)

I have 3 HDD of 1TB of greater.

The BIOS was set to boot from the first SATA drive only (as discovered in BIOS) so the selection was correct.

It should also be noted that each drive had a volume label sequenced as "label1", "Label2" and "BOOT" for the C: drive.

The boot configuration (BCDEdit in the command window will reveal this) referred to the boot device as C: not C:(Boot). There was no reference to the label anywhere.

So I removed the label 'Boot' on the C: drive. An thereafter the issue was resolved. The bonus was the whole boot process was accelerated considerably as the OS was not trying to figured out what the hell I was trying to do.

The OS system did not like the label on the root drive but seems OK on the other drives.
