Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
I don't think anyone from Microsoft are looking at this. They are probably working on another version as we speak, so that everyone has to go out and buy more new equipment and spend more money on something that is not quite right. They will never admit that they got it wrong..................
I could even stand the charm bar if the popup date thing didn't come with it.

Earlier you indicated that you had achieved that. E.g. only seeing the ghost charms when you put your pointer in the extreme right corners--what you get when using a real mouse. Then get a real mouse and disable your Touchpad completely. <eg>
But this reminds me that something happened on the last set of updates (or last boot) which has regressed my Touchpad support back to the W7 level driver (actually left me without any at all), so I will have to reinstall the new driver to do any more experimenting with it. Do you still have your Toshiba 16.4 one? If not, a possible reason for this may be unsigned drivers. In that case we would have to use a boot option which says disable unsigned driver protection to keep using that driver. Event Viewer may provide clues about what is happening in that case.
Also, changing the driver version may even go so far as to redo the SGS initialization. So check to see if your customizations are sticking. And even if it appears that options that you have changed are still in effect, sometimes it is necessary to toggle them twice to see the actual desired effect. Etc.
