Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Ok, I have read through the gist of the thread and this is not directed @ Peter specifically nor to any one entry.
There was something about tied to hardware. YES. It was fully correct. For example: Upgrade to Win10. Then do a Custom install, no problem.... change the OS drive, Custom install, no problem. Remember the phrase, "the same machine". As long as it recognises the hardware (the chipset), that it 'knows' it belongs to that machine, that it is its computer (already). Another (new) machine, buy it an OS of its own.
As far as some unfortunate experience w/ 10, that's sad, indeed. Not knowing any explanation to that particular scenario... I couldn't recommend Windows 10 w/ enough enthusiasm to do it justice. It's just a joy & a pleasure to use. So easy, so capable, so problem-free. So, sure wait until near the end of July BUT, don't pass up the opportunity. Don't stay in the past. We turned a really good corner w/ 10. It works well & does, can do a lot, on many levels, tasks & settings.
I do believe Jumplist is not any longer limited to max of 10. Frequent & Pinned will/can show; Pinned = QA. There is some Rt Clk functions but, maybe not as granular as you are wanting.
There are some things in the current Insider Build that will eventually filter down to the mainstream Windows 10s. Let's just say will be kewl to see them there & they will be liked.
The real answer to this thread (topic) is happily, excitedly get the heck off 8.1 & on to Windows 10 and the Charms Bar issue is gone, doesn't exist. And, bonus, now have a better, nicer, more appealing OS to boot (excuse the pun, lol)

I am using Windows 8 because someone very generous gave me PC. Windows 8 is horrible. I have a Macbook Pro and iPad and I must say that once this PC dies, I'm getting another Apple product. Every Apple product is more expensive but so worth the money. Windows products just get worse and worse.
