Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
If you upgraded and activated on that computer, there is a Windows 10 license permanently tied to that specific system (mainly tied to mainboard.)
Oh, thanks for the information. I left out the explanation as to why I was posting on a Windows 8 forum. When I tried to re-load Windows 7 on a fresh install, I didn't think about the fact that my second personal partition would be removed and all my personal documents deleted. I would have lost everything had I not been using CrashPlan for backup. As it was, I lost some things because I hadn't been running the backup service for a few weeks.
Anyway, my dilemma at that point was to either get a new HD while I worked to somehow recover the overwritten data or just get a new computer. I opted for the latter and got stuck with Windows 8 (That was in part my impetus to buy a computer right then as all computers with eight were being phased out in favor of 10). Frankly, if I had the choice I would have gone with Windows 7 and just stayed with it. Removing all the libraries from the Explorer Navigation Pane using registry hacks is much more of a pain in eight.
Can you tell me whether I can now sort and customize the taskbar jumplists and whether I can increase the number of items beyond the limit of 10 that had been imposed on us as of last September?
