Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

You took a sentence out of a paragraph and addressed it - the paragraph is the whole point, so... I think you should read the whole thing and respond to the whole thing. It's why I posted the whole thing.
People SHOULD be cautious about doing something as complex and risky as changing their entire underlying OS - not to have a backup in place and all your other ducks in a row (your installation media, product keys, and all your important files - like documents, emails, pictures, music, etc.) like you should ALWAYS have (but an extra one just to be current right before you undertake the process) would be FOOLISH at best.
While there *are* people not having problems - there are likely just as many having problems. It was inevitable: the undertaking to smoothly upgrade millions of possible combinations of hardware and software ... BIG. A computer is not a toaster, it is a multi-tasking, multi-faceted and complicated device.
Don't fall into a comfortable anecdotal fallacy...
As an IT Pro I agree & am fully aware of what you say & always advocate same. That's all just good, standard "Best Practices'.
Indeed, I did a Sys Image beforehand & everything is always triple redundantly backedup.. Same as anyone should.
Actually, w/ this Win10 Upgrade (as opposed to the past) the majority seem to be reporting a favorable time w/ the process.
But, yes, w/ a the variables & factors involved w/ the monumental task of this Global endeavour things may not be ideal in every case.
I have often used the same line & told clients computers need TLC and cannot be treated like toasters.
