Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
The calculator as been mentioned often since long ago. At which point a nice alternative was offered which, runs multiple instances & has 2 views. As w/ many things, there are usually alternatives to Store APPs & no obligation to use Store APPs.
There is, also, no obligation to use the Charms Bar. It's more problematic to some laptops than anything. There are some people who like & use the Charms Bar. But, it does not exist in Win10 so this discussion will stay w/ 8.1.

How does it "make things faster and easier" when I am trying to work on a document and every time I move my cursor to the side of the monitor or move it to another monitor I have to get rid of an annoyance that you force on me that has absolutely no relevance to what I am trying to do? It is comparable to making driving at night "faster and easier" by having the sun visor on your car fall and block your view every time you try to turn.
The ability to "search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings" has no relevance to what 90% of the business professionals who are moving to more functional operating systems because of this stuff do every day. We search when we want to search, not every time we change monitors or move a cursor to a corner. We might share a link or photo 10 times per year. We connect devices and change settings 1 time when we first set a machine up. It makes no sense to claim that you made things faster and easier by forcing us to interact with something 30 times every hour that we might have a use for 10 times per year. If you want to appeal to 13 year old girls, you may have been successful with this. But you killed your adult customer base with it.
