Can we disable the charms bar in Windows 8?

Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK.  The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left),  keeps appearing.  It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

"I am sorry to inform you that we do not have any option to disable the Charms Bar in Windows 8."

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Hi Deborah,

Thank you for choosing Windows 8 and posting your query on Microsoft Community Forums.

It seems that you are not happy with the “Charms Bar” in Windows 8 as it always appears when you move the mouse pointer to the right hand side of your computer screen and would like to know if we can disable it.

I am sorry to inform you that we do not have any option to disable the Charms Bar in Windows 8. I can definitely forward your suggestions to the concerned department.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

Hope this information is helpful.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8.  I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly.  Thank you.

    Hi Rajesh Govind!

The response given to Deborah is just plainly insufficient.

As another person said, we DID NOT choose Windows8 as it comes with any new laptop you purchase with no option to actually remove it.

It would be fine if it was functional and not "pretty". Pretty is something rather subjective and well, personally I am not particularly impressed with the prettiness and definately not at all with the functionality which is just not there. If you have to make 2 or 3 clicks to get where you want when before you only needed one, This is not functional and it is no longer a system tha eases my life: It is a pain.

Good that Classic Shell little program removes a part of that pain. Only part, however...

Now the completely useless and irritating Charm bar that brings us here. Honestly, do some work about it and bring us some updates as not only the "thing" appears when you are close to the right side of the screen, but just anytime it pleases, may the cursor be in the very middle of the screen or on the far right side for any random and obscure reason.

Your reply is just what the situation is but not good enough considering the amount of people facing the same situation with no solution given. We are talking here about the biggest (¿?) company in the world... Get your engineers working. Provide customer service and sort out the problem efficiently and fast enough. Give users the choice to customise appearance regarding this-and other issues that fortunately are covered by Classic Shell. As said earlier, we want a system that eases our lifes, not a burden.

Thanks and looking forward to a quick and efficient solution to one of the most stupid features invented by Windows. Don´t bother replying to me. I bet you are pretty busy and probably underpaid. Big Corps, we know how they treat their staff...

    Regards,

    MAR

Faster and easier? I have a laptop WITH A TOUCH SCREEN, and when I am working as I usually am in Firefox and Excel 07 I will be interrupted at least every 5-10 minutes by the charms bar.  I have a touch screen for when I need it, why ever can't I disable the charms bar from the cursor? And please don't get me started on the lack of any functional equivalent to My Recent Documents or the complete inability to customize the start screen...
