Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

I am the pleased owner of a Lenovo G585 laptop which I have had since last year.
I am NOT a luddite and generally look forward to new developments in all sorts of things with great enthusiasm. Also, I have been a computer user (home and professionally) for many years. I was very frustrated and angry when I first used this computer (W8) it was very clumsy and seemed to have characteristics which were far more difficult to use than my previous W7. These characteristics seemed to have been included with the sole intention of making work a **** of a lot more time consuming. Whereas one was used to almost forgetting the computer to concentrate on work, this new OS demanded ones exclusive attention, wasting enormous amounts of (non available) time.
I have stuck with it in spite of, at times, being sorely tempted to literally throw the thing out of the window and I think it and I have arrived at a sort of compromise except for these blessed so called' charms'
I did contact a number of MS engineers about the 'charms' , they all repeated the mantra ''we have no plans to remove or change this feature.'' A couple of them did make suggestions to try to help. Nothing worked on this computer except the suggestion that has made the problem easier to work with and that was to abandon the touch pad and use an ordinary mouse!!!
Would you please concede that using the touch pad (as I should be able to do) I DO NOT NEED TO BE REMINDED OF THE TIME AND THE SETTINGS etc every 10-15 seconds

Precisely so. I could live with all the other awful features, but charms is intolerable. I have tried all the advice in this thread and it STILL randomly pops up in the middle of doing stuff. It is most annoying during gaming that uses edge scrolling. Every time I have to go to the right to do ANYTHING, it closes my gaming window.
