Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

I also have the same frustrating problem with the Windows 8 OS with regards to the charms bar and would like to disable it. But there is no disable function in my Control Panel's Touchpad configuration options on my Lenovo Ideapad computer. So I am waiting for Windows to become a user-friendly operating system again like the rare instance that XP offered after the SP3 patches finally provided. Most of the GUI versions of Windows since 3.1 have left major disappointments for me. I have owned and used almost every Microsoft OS and Apple's OSs since the mid 1980s and have found the Windows products to each be generally fault-filled products that unfortunately were "the lesser of all the evils" when compared to other OS systems. The programs I needed generally constrained my computer-purchasing practices to the PC platforms. I now have a number of computers, mostly of the XP version. My newer Lenovo, however, is a primary use one for me for business needs and it is the most unpleasant experience for me, always creating stress-filled and unnecessary work and work-arounds to use it for a wide variety of needs. Your company should have beta tested it before release. I assure you I would have given it an F- grade if I had been in that test group!
I totally agree with you.... I have been saying the same exact thing. Not many people are smart enough to know what you have picked up but it is all true. I do think Windows 7 however was the best they put out for my blend of programs.. Windows 8 was a step away from productivity and a new sandbox for the public to pay for with a loss to productivity.
