Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Totally agree. I can probably learn to adapt to many of the new (but useless) changes in Win8, but that edge swipe is the most annoying thing…ever! And mine kicks in even if I'm in the MIDDLE of the screen! I agree, too, with the person who said that maybe the system is great for gamers, but I'm guessing most of us have to use it (because that's all the company will buy) for business. Honestly? Apple is awesome, it reads Windows stuff, though Windows does not read Apple stuff…just very easy to use. Thankfully, I DO have a MacBook, so I can do most of my work on it. Unfortunately, I have an embroidery software system that only works on Windows. Very sad here. We convinced the folks at Viking to come out with a Mac version, but it is such a slimmed down version that most of us cannot use it. Another sad thing. What the heck is MS holding over everyone's heads? So, MS, get those 20-something computer "experts" outta there, get in someone who knows business over games, and set this right. Trust me--once people try Apple, it's very very hard to go back to MS...
Make sure you have the latest drivers from the PC or trackpad manufacturer. These should provide the advanced settings that the generic MS driver doesn't provide access to.
The generic driver is just that, it provides basic functionality for most devices. It's up to the manufacturer to provide device specific drivers.
If you prefer MacOS over Win8 then simply use the Mac. If the only thing preventing the switch is a single program why not try that program under Parallels (or the like) on the Mac?
