Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Wow! Lucky you, Drew. I've been fighting my Windows 8 for quite a while. I have removed everything except that one idiotic software that only works on a PC (believe me, many of us have tried to get the software manufacturer to make the software available to Apple computers--it would work so much more smoothly there). So I just take a deep breath before I turn on my PC and know that I will be faced with the "annoying issue" the entire time I am on it. It makes it rather difficult to scroll, because if you scroll, you are in the "danger zone" where the pop up occurs. Argh. But I have found out (from this forum??) that the reason MS put in the "annoying issue" was because it was a swipe system that was handy for the ereader-type computers, thus requiring only one operating system instead of several. What happens is likely very workable on an ereader. Unfortunately, also, the combining of the operating systems allowed MS to fire 18,000 employees. :-( Yet another not-very-good outcome of this whole shebang. But, consider yourself a lucky son of a gun, Drew.
I am not "lucky". I just use the settings & options provided & it will only show up if I shove the mouse hard into the Bottom-Right Corner or hit Win+C. All the scrolling in the world isn't going to risk anything.
Even, back when I was Beta Testing Windows 8 it would pop out unexpectedly but, I stopped that w/ the Reg tweak... before the current option was available. Before any of that I would just not put windows right tight against the Right Edge... then, I didn't have to be so careful or mindful of the Charms Bar. But, I quickly learned how not to have the issue. And when I found out about the Reg tweak, used that. And (now) when MS gave the option setting, used that.
It's not luck. And I am, certainly, far from being the only one who does not have this problem or issue. Interestingly enough, none of my clients & customers w/ whom I have had anything to do w/ their Windows 8.1 have ever voiced this Charms Bar thing as a concern to me or told me they are experiencing it. When they want it, they summon it, otherwise, no worries. Same as myself & many, many others; maybe most others.
Something doesn't jibe...
