Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
For business users. I was not able to have a productive day on Windows 8 and I struggled with a multitude of issues beyond the charms bar. It could have been crappy hardware as in the Sony Vaio but regardless I made a decision to get a Mac and did not know what to expect. All I knew was that I could no longer run my business on my Sony Vaio Win8 system. Since the day I made that decision I have been happily coding, developing, and handling all the daily tasks with speed and ease.
To each his own. Just my personal experience was terrible. Even now when going through department stores I will mess with the trackpads on the various POS hardware combos from multiple manufacturers. The Apple touchpad and mouse work so well and when I try to move around on any windows machine it just does not feel right anymore.
For desktop however I still prefer old stable Windows 7 which works great. Just that Windows 8 drove me away from 20 years of being a hardcore Windows advocate. Now I find myself completely flipped on the other side.
I feel bad for the person that bought my Vaio on Ebay. They probably are asking all their friends to fix their computer. Maybe if I bought a different piece of hardware I would have had a different experience? Not sure but it definitely just seemed Win 8 did not like my entire suite of software programs I needed to migrate from win7.
For home users - no doubt.
Here's what we are going to make, that's it.
