Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Yes, I read ALL of the 58 pages before I submitted my question. If there had been any that dealt with removing the accursed thing from a desktop, or solved my problem using a mouse or Hot Key, I wouldn't have submitted the question.
Unlike many people, I don't use a touchpad. See no use for them. I use a desktop computer. Remember those? Even my cell phone is used ONLY to make voice calls. Talking is much more polite and personal than texting, don't you agree?
Yes, I may be called 'Old Fashioned', I don't even do Social Networking, other than to seek a solution to a problem on "Help" forums like this, cuz I consider SN to be a cancer on our society.
If you can direct me to a specific solution, it would help. I'm not even averse to tinkering with the registry. Done it before with surprisingly good results. Just don't have the time or inclination to dig through it right now if there is a simpler way.

Ok, in spite of a hefty quantity of sarcasm which, I'll ignore...
I do share the attitude about phones for talk vs text; even Skype instead of E-mail... although, certainly, on occasion, there IS a time, place & reason for text & E-mail. And, I, also, am not a big user of fan of SN. but, each to their own... lord knows, for many, it is used a lot. But, all that is not this discussion.
I, too, am using a mouse/keyboard PC and 8.1 ergo, we should be on the same wavelength.
And as another fellow said, I, too, do not see the Charms Bar unless & until I ask for it.
Way back when I was Beta Testing Windows 8.0 there was a know Registry tweak known to stop the Charms Bar popping out unrequested. That IS described in this thread. We used that up until 8.1
Since 8.1 it is no longer necessary to use the Registry method.
In 8.1 a new tab was added w/in Taskbar Properties call Navigation.
Under it are 2 sections, the top one is Corner Navigation and the bottom one is Start Screen.
Under Corner Navigation the 1st item checkbox is checked, by default.
It reads: When I point to the upper-right corner, show the charms
IF that ^ is UNchecked, the only way the Charms Bar will, now, show is if the mouse (cursor) is shoved hard into the bottom-right corner OR if Win+C is used.
This ^ has, also, been previously articulated in this thread.
Since you are running Windows 8.1, what you have and what has been listed above will be the same.
