Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
To me, it seems that MS has become a follower instead of a leader. Just compare Google Chrome's appearance features to Windows 8, almost like fraternal twins.
Apparently, MS wants to go with glitter instead of functionality. Reminds me of when the U.S. Army went to comic book style instruction manuals to teach recruits how to do things.
People who don't have a clue how their car works end up spending more in repairs over someone who has even minimal knowledge. Same thing with computers.

You don't need to say sorry. This is how a lot of people feel! All my colleagues here at DESY feel the same. So go ahead and re-install Windows 7, not only because Aero looks much nicer than the one-color plus rectangles Windows "John Ive mockup" 8 design, but also because its Human-Computer-Interaction design is much better.
Unfortunately on this forum you will be burnt for being that narrow minded and backward oriented, people - especially the MVPs here - will tell you that you are dumb and that you would stick to driving a sixties Pinto rather than getting something new and better like Windows 8.
So before the MVPs here unload the 'you are worse than Hitler for not using Windows 8 and finding it great' BS on you, log out, get a copy of Windows 7 and be happy again.
After using Windows 8 on my private Acer laptop for six month, I re-installed it with Windows 7 and it was like coming home from a long nightmarish one-colored Guantanamo trip, where Microsoft spills rectangle charmed water over your face every time you don't expect it.
I recently installed Windows XP on an older single core Pentium and it's great for this machine. I'd pay bucks for extended XP support, but seems like Microsoft does not want that money.
I even installed Vista on one of my laptops because it originally came with Vista and I actually do like Vista now after seeing 8 (Media Player controls in the taskbar are great, why did Microsoft remove them from Win 7?).
