Can we disable the charms bar in Windows 8?

Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK.  The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left),  keeps appearing.  It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8.  I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly.  Thank you.

    I have tried everything and can't stop the charms from popping into view. The clock is the most annoying feature ever!!  Even when typing in the center of the screen, the charms pop up.

    Hey All

    Overall Microsoft made brave step with all new metro thing

    I'm not disappointing from this at all Im sure you guys will figure it up

    and its will be better then Start menu

    but Windows 8.X in general for me

    its like buying new sport car with just looking the shinny body it have

    and not taking it to drive, you guys should test in on desktop PC before GA

    The "engineers" can say what they want that its ready for GA

    but without "test drive"...

    we the PC users unable to work with OS that build up by touch laptops / tablets

    At least give us a Options to disable / change Setting

    There are some inaccuracies in what you have said or maybe, it is just coming from a lack of awareness.

    1. There was a huge amount of "testing" & "test driving" done for a long time before the GA.  I know, I am one of the official, registered, Beta-Testers.  There were a huge number of us globally working for months before the GA... as well as public use & feedback before the GA. And the testing was done on ALL devices including non-touch PCs.

    2.  Windows 8.x was designed of ALL devices not, just smart phone or tablets and for BOTH non-touch and touch.  It works very well on ALL devices & very well whether the device is non-touch or touch

    1. The OS is chock-full of options & choices.  There is no obligation to use Start, active Tiles, Charms Bar, etc, etc.  Windows 8.1 and 8.1.1 increased the available options greatly from even what they were in  8.0 and catered, even more, to non-touch & mouse/keyboard users.
