Can we disable the charms bar in Windows 8?

Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK.  The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left),  keeps appearing.  It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8.  I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly.  Thank you.

    this is the first windows os I've used in years, if the charms bar is the best your programmers can do it will definitely be the last. Dumb ****

    I can't believe that MS even reads these comments. this is about the 5th time I have seen the same exact response to differently worded complaints re: the Charm bar on Win8. With as much money as we, the consumer, give this company I would think that they could actually have someone respond with an unscripted answer.

    I HATE MS Win 8.... I want to go back to 7!!!

    Note: I recall seeing a spot where you could disable the corners, upper and lower. I have a non-touch screen and had someone reset it  so I could have the charm corners disabled and that part is...unfortunately  the charms now pop up whenever my pointer gets close to the middle area (right side of my laptop).

    1st of all, let's try to take a deep breath, calm down & see if we can make you happier.  Writing off or condemning an entire, very, good OS over the Charms Bar and going backwards... let's see if we can come up w/ something better than hitting the panic button.

    Now, I, also, have a non-touch screen/monitor except mine is not a laptop.  And where I have no issues from the Charms Bar I understand there sometimes problems w/ it on some laptops.

    That said, there are 2 things need to be done. one I know about 1st hand the other is in regard to touchpads, fingerpads on laptops & this I have only heard about but, will pass it on to you, anyway.

    1. Rt Clk on the Taskbar > Properties > Navigation tab. At the top under Corner navigation UNcheck the box "When I point to the upper-right corner, show the charms".
    2. Somewhere in the control window for your fingerpad settings there is an option there which disables some functionality that will put things closer to what you want or brings down the sensitivity or both.  Sorry, I can't be more explicit.  I trust you will find the needed item.
    3. The only other suggestion I can offer is you might find it more pleasant if you can use a mouse instead of the touchpad. 

    Hey, @ least I have tried to help a bit and you did not receive another 'scripted reply'.  And just to give you something to look forward to... when you migrate to Windows 10 next year, you won't have these concerns regarding the Charms Bar.
