Can we disable the charms bar in Windows 8?

Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK.  The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left),  keeps appearing.  It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8.  I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly.  Thank you.

    Well ... with all the unhappy posts about the annoying & dysfunctional charms, I find it fascinating that Microsoft still has done NOTHING to correct this joke of a function or create a fix to turn it off EFFECTIVELY ... or at least, create an option for the user to kick the **** out of it, somehow, virtually perhaps ... let's face it ... all of us feel like doing that. It makes me VERY unhappy that this pseudo genius option sloooooows me down more often that I can count ... hello Microsoft !!!  time is money ... no ?  I like to propose an idea ... if all of us start contacting our local TV stations about this issue & ongoing lack of resolution, it might create enough pressure & embarrassment ( as it should ) for Microsoft, that perhaps they will jump on this with a greater sense of urgency ... which is what should have happened the moment first customer pointed out this miserable flaw. And btw, no, I am not looking forward to windows 10 ... Microsoft, I just bought this disaster & do not wish to spend more money on yet another product. This one should work properly. If it isn't , fix it. Period.

    This is somewhat rhetorical... just wondering...

    1. The fact that is isn't or won't be an issue in Windows 10 is, for the moment, irrelevant for those plagued by the problem
    2. We are, is clear y'all are seeing, it is, @ least mostly, peculiar to some laptops.  And, that since many laptops & PCs are not affected, it is not an issue that is inherent to the OS.

    Wonder sometimes...

    Have those plagued by this contacted the or their specific vendor or machine brand Support about the phenomenon for a solution?
