Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Totally agree that Microsoft's ignorance toward such an inconvenience warrants my no longer
being a purchaser of future products of theirs.
If they don't recall this, egg on their face. They should be ashamed to have charged $ for this
version. Time to switch to the competition who's had their act together in a better way for a long time anyhow.
Obviously, I have been staying out of this 'conversation'.
However, I am going to allow myself to repeat a couple of things.
I take nothing away from those who are having a problem with the Charms Bar; not downplaying how troubling it may be, @ all. It has been established that the issue, usually, arises in some laptops, relating to their touchpads.
What one could accept is it is not, cannot be, inherently rooted in the OS or everyone, on every (type of) machine, would have the issue & reality is, that is not the case. Most never see the Charms Bar until & unless they ask for it.
Nothing is going to change regarding the Charms Bar in Windows 8.1 BUT, if one can be patient, the concern is not applicable to Windows 10. Ergo, once one has migrated to Win10 they will have no basis for this topic or discussion. This, among other things, has been changed, in response to the what people (like you) have voiced.
As for raising an object to Windows 10 based on cost... it is, strongly, suspected that, @ least for 8.1 owners (maybe 7, also) the Upgrade from 8.1 to Windows 10 will have no cost attached. Admittedly, this is not, yet, officially confirmed but, it is what is expected. If not free, then some VERY LOW promo price, similar to onset of the 8.1 release.
The difference regarding the Charms Bar is just one of a plethora of reasons it is suspected Windows 10 will be very well received. It's, really, simple & easy, enjoyable and pleasant to use, great Features & impressive performance.
