Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
After one year of dealing with the most horrific OS ever created, Windows 8.1, fighting an out of control charms bar that froze all work every 3 minutes, trying everything including but not limited to having Microsoft Level II techs go into my registry 3 times for a total of 9 hours, they completely screwed my new Acer Aspire Laptop up. Now it no longer installs any Windows Updates since they went into the registry & they can not figure out why. Here is what finally worked to kill the bottom right corner if you have an elan touchpad: go into the registry by run/ regedit.exe/ software/elan touchpad/SmartPadDisplay change the entire list of settings to number 1. Then open the elan properties on your control panel, go to options, the new settings will bring up additional fields that may not be on your normal settings list, disable anything related to edge swipes, set sensitivity to lower setting, even if you think you have done it with edge swipes displayed prior. Click out of your registry- Done. The only way the charms bar comes up is if you dive deep a few times to bring it up on the bottom right, but it will not appear with normal swipes across the very bottom right corner. In fact sometimes it never comes up. The point is getting rid of it so it does not antagonize you as you're working.
Or one could, like as stated many times in this thread by a few different people, adjust the touchpad settings.
@ least, when you have Windows 10 this won't be a problem, any longer.
