Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
If its a touchpad and it's from synaptics, then you can deactivate this anoying synaptics feature in thier settings. You have to install the driver that is provided by synaptics though. Not the one from Microsoft. Updating the driver from the device manager will not do the trick. You have to download the driver from Synaptics.
Thanks, I'm using the touchpad, from Synaptics, and have just loaded the driver again ( 16.3.15.1 ) but am having a bit of difficulty finding where to deactivate this feature in settings. Sorry for being so obtuse.

Ah Ha, I have disabled edge swipe in settings, now to see what occurs, or doesn't.
Preliminary tests looking good, I can still get the charms bar if I go to the top right corner of the screen and flick down, or bottom right and flick up, but other than that, all seems well.

I thought I had solved the problem, but I hadn't.
I thought I had updated to the latest driver, but when I checked in Device Manager I had version 16.3.15.1
I chose "Update Driver " and now have version 16.3.4 ( which seems to be an earlier one ????? )
I will see if there is any difference and post back after I have well tested it.

Still the same, I noticed while using Google Earth just now, that I only need to be within 5-6cms of the right hand side of the screen to set off the charms bar, and once it is set off, moving the pointer from right to left seems to drag the bar out again, it happens every few seconds, it is most annoying.
Are you using the touchpad or mouse?

On an Asus laptop though, which does not uses a Synaptics touchpad, I havent found any option to deactivate this feature.
With the mouse though, I havent seen or experience such a problem. The mouse will always activate the charms if pointed to right upper and lower corner. Nowhere else.
