Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Perhaps Microsoft should consider making the Charms Bar an option. 90% of people will never remove it, but those who really don't want it there as it interferes with their desktop experience should be allowed to do so.
You can say that it "helps you do the things you do most often" but in reality, I already know how to do all those things quickly and efficiently using the keyboard. And if I want to move the cursor out of the way while I'm working on something, and move it over to the right, I shouldn't be forced to relocate it again to make a popup disappear that I don't want appearing in the first place.
It's just a shame it seems to be designed primarily for touch screen phones / pads etc , but is still bundled with all new laptops sold in the UK.
Well it's primarily designed for Tablet PCs, which is both: A laptop and a Tablet. And the two "worlds" makes sense in such devices.
It works well with the mouse. I connect my Surface Pro to a 19" Monitor if I'm at home and I use a bluetooth mouse and a full blown keyboard. The feature that I use most is the snapped view, which is really better than the old Windows docking system (I don't mean the Win 7 snap).
I never had a problem like accidentally activating the charms before.
Some complains I can really understand, some I don't. The start-button-orb for example. Some people just prefer static buttons instead of hidden button. This should be optional.
People simply are complaining about stuff even though it's there. Like printing in the mail app. or forwarding email. They complain that its not possible. But you cant use an OS without knowing the concept. Printing and forwarding was always there. If you know the concept of Win 8, then you will find these stuff easily.
If you decide to use MacOS or Linux instead of Windows, you have to learn the concepts of this systems too. In MacOS you have to know that the menu are always in the top bar for example.
