Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

the simple turn off side swipe works like a charm!! haha

It would be appreciated that some of us would like to be able to enable or disable certain features within our control. My use for Win 8 is Business and there is just too much cuteness and cool for it for me. I wish we had a better way to go back to Win 7 without penalties. I am NOT a fan of Win 8. I want more control of the OS not it CONTROLLING MY LIFE or WORK and not affecting my ability negatively to do my job. I have wasted hours today trying to fix a zoom problem that is erratic that is driving me nuts... I don't need this.
i couldn't have said it better. besides the three weeks it took me to become familiar with all the changes I've had an on going battle with the charm bar popping up (doesn't matter where i am on the screen). Photos displaying all my photos in some sort of slide show that 1. I never asked for or setup 2. just want gone, same issue with the outlook, purchased yet another copy to add to my library. MS support replied to this thread earlier on stating that windows is trying to make thing easier... I thought i was going to fall out of my chair...

Print... just print from Adoby reader or some other win8 application... i had to look this up on the web..
refresh my wireless connections to see those available when i want, not when win8 wants to refresh.
close some applications out? omg who would figure this would be an issue.
saving a file.... where's the ole directory structure.. (i mean it's there but it's so ridiculously child like. So much so i had no idea what i was looking at for a few moments..

Notepad... where the heck is it? i have to open a cmd to open note pad and calculator.
my frustration level with this operating system is un-measurable. Even Microsoft ME was better than this..... give me Centennial... I would remove this OS asap if it weren't for the customers that are using it.... I just can't afford to look like an idiot so i need to learn it... painful... just painful.
