Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
you missed my point and my sarcasm but that's okay... it really had little to do with the org. topic anyhow. no need to be rude i get you like the OS... good for you. I'm actually quite technical and know a great deal but that's neither here or there... I don't like Win 8....
I graduated computer science back when windows 3.1 was released, I've been working in the industry since.. I work with Unix/linux Mac's and of course windows. I use my systems as tools... if a carpenter woke up one day to find his hammer completely redesigned (looking more like a screwdriver) he would feel much like myself, i would assume..
This doesn't mean he doesn't know how to use it just, means he's frustrated, What use to take one swing to drive the nail now takes 5. if I wanted to work with a tablet then i would have just borrowed my husbands....

ha? The Adobe Reader has nothing to do with Win 8. The Metro App from Adobe didnt had a print function a long time... Which is not the fault of Win 8... Its Adobes fault.
Printing in general in Metro is the same... Use the Charms bar...

You know that you dont have to close the Metro Apps right? They get suspended after a while. Means they dont consume any CPU or Memory.
Besides if you really want to close Apps... You have 3 options.... Drag from top to bottom (which only makes sense on touch screens), Closing via right click on the App-Taskbar, Alt+F4.

How about just typing "note" in the Start menu? Or pin notepad in the start menu if you need it so often

I think your frustration just comes from the fact that you dont know the system or its concept.
You dont even know the simple stuffs like -> you can start typing in the start menu and Win 8 start searching for the program or file.
Win 8 is way better than Win 7 or any MS OS. It has its problems, that for sure. Some of those are fixed in 8.1. It's still the best OS out there.
