Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
the real issue was Microsoft know they are right .... that is what people don't like it makes no difference how wonderful something is if it takes more time and effort to do the same thing people should have the option to leave it as it was, its a hard sell to say I will make this thing more difficult and time consuming to use to be honest the only way it was even going to be tried is by forcing it to be used its just in this case it was not of benefit to the users the pointlessness of some of the things really beggars belief and I will buy a surface tablet same as I will buy a Nokia phone but I do it despite the shortcomings in the operating system because if people don't they will never learn and evolve and whilst microsoft seems to have forgotten the main rule of business its only a temporary phase
windows XP is almost the same as win95 vista was very odd windows 7 is fine win 8 was a untrained dog win 8.1 is a untrained dog with a muzzle on but it still stinks and sheds but it now cannot chew the furniture which is better, better still would be have the dog trained
Putting in a 3rd Party start option isn't going to impact this Charms Bar issue in Laptops.
But, ppl on 8.1 w/ this issue are sure going to smile when Win10 comes along, for them.
