Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

You are, of course, absolutely right, what I can't get my head around is the fact that these companies seem to be completely unconcerned about their reputations. Are they really so powerful they need not bother themselves with such trivia?

You know what is really lacking in this industry... There should be some centralized website that catalogs user complaints and works to prove "whos fault" they are. Rather than MS pointing the finger at third party vendors of software or hardware OR rather than third party vendors pointing their fingers at MS... There should be blame cast with proof of the claim on a website so users can know if
A) It is definitely MS fault
B) It is definitely Software Vendors fault
C) It is definitely Hardware Vendors fault
Then each party should have a log of verified complaints and what actions they take to fix them. One thing I cannot stand is that the finger gets pointed all over the place. In my personal opinion MS sucks but I cannot totally prove it. One thing I know is all my problems are happening on Windows 8 whereas they did not occur on Windows 7 Pro. However my hardware is completely different and a few issues have been verified to be Sony VAIO in my case.
I guess it does get more complicated when each computer can have all sorts of different software installed... However I will say Linux does a damn good job of handling this kind of stuff. Those systems are highly stable but they are not as open to all versions of software...
Maybe the best thing to do is build a Linux Box and install something like ProxMox on it. Then build images and keep the capability to push back to older stable versions of what you spend your time building.
