Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
I put spaces and paragraphs... Don't know why it concatenated everything together. blah. blah. I just need to vent on here sometimes. Hoping maybe they will get their heads out of their asses someday.
THe bottom right is the least intrusive of all of them but sometimes happens to me when I try to click the show desktop hidden link which takes up the bottom right corner. Are you using Win 8.1? Possibly the top down can be fixed on my side as I am only 50% fixed on my side. I still have the top right going down action and bottom right going up action. Its too bad MS is so incompetent to have overlooked what has frustrated millions of users. Many of the users do not even understand what is happening so the amount of people actually complaining represents a huge pool of dissatisfied users.. Then you got idiots like that Raj guy from MS that says you cannot do anything about it and basically says live with it while us lowly users found a way around it anyway. lol. Just cracks me up. Whenever someone says "You could be the next Bill Gates" I say.. "Please don't say that"... Truth is Bill Gates was an idiot because he basically copied UNIX, the most stable OS in the world and made it into Windows by grabbing technology and forming it into the buggiest most unstable OS in the world... Heck, when Windows 95 came out, everyone in the country went out and bought it.. It sucked so bad that they released Win98 and the whole country went out again and bought it and praised the loser after dishing out hundreds more dollars for what was actually a fix for a flawed and crappy Win95 OS. Flash forward and then you got a good OS in WinXP finally! Then they screwed up big time with Vista... Then they went back to what worked again with Win7. Now they are going back to instability and crashes with Win8. I know the idiot is no longer directly dealing with MS but all his minions are carrying on with this POS OS. I wish we could go back 30-40 years and redo history with someone that was smart and could have built of UNIX properly and made something stable... Something so good that if you tried to develop 3rd party software that it would either WORK or NOT WORK so they could continuously point the finger at 3rd party... In Linux when you compile **** it either works or does not work and then if it does not work you have to figure it out.. When it does work you move on in life and never worry about it. This is where MS sucks royally. They blame everyone and never take responsibility..
