Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Microsoft should never have sold out desktop users like they did. It would have been very easy for Microsoft to have made somethiing like Start8 for us. I will never have anything other than a Desktop and I don't want to use software designed for touchscreen and tablets on my Desktop.
Having recently purchased a new desktop PC with windows 8 as the OS, having upgraded from a previous PC with XP. I tend to agree with the above. If I want my PC to look like a tablet surely I would have purchased a tablet? Windows 8 may look all nice and dandy but if you want to be productive its awful.
So Microsoft how about producing a Desk Top OS that has the look and feel of XP but with all the latest security? Or at the very least produce an OS that can be customerised by the using so they have a choice of how they set up the system, classic or graphical. I appreciated that some of this can be achieved by downloading third party software but should we have to?
I grow up with Win 3.0, then I got 3.11, and then the rest of them...better or worse. But this Win.8.1 drives me CRAZY!. I WANT MY MONEY BACK! And it will take time to convince me to buy another new MS product. I DON'T TRUST MICROSOFT ANYMORE!.
Mister Bill Gates, I need my computer to do my job, to earn back the money you steal from me by this garbage "product"... FIX THESE ISSUES A.S.A.P. AND FREE...otherwise you'll loose millions of customers.
