Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
MS need to do something about this ASAP! I'm a CRM consultant and when Im working (in Windows) I have to use the scroll bars constantly when Im building and developing. And where do MS put the hidden Charms command? RIGHT ON THE TOP OF THE SCROLL BAR!!!! Was this actually tested with professional business users of p.c's??? I think not. More like a bunch of casual Apple wannabes. If I want a pad I'll buy one. Stop trying to turn my p.c. into one! Also - Im not partialy sighted: Why are all the tiles like something from a Leapfrog toy?????
I agree. I actually HATE the set up. I so wish my software manufacturer would produce the same software for the Mac--MUCH better interface. I guess I'm stuck with Win8 but I find all the cleverness (like, say, the new way to close items--by sliding them down and over to the left-hand bottom corner) to take far more steps than necessary or than the old way did. Besides, I don't have a Think Pad--if I wanted software for a Think Pad, THAT'S what I would have got. I've had this Win8 for quite a few months now. Still not liking it in the least. They REALLY need to have a disable feature, because, while they assume that the 5 people they talked to really like it, they haven't talked to the hundreds of thousands of the rest of us who do not. It's extremely frustrating, so I end up doing all I can on my MacBook and then exporting it to a pdf if I want it on my Win8 computer. Very, very frustrating...still.
