Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Although it was very courteous of you to attempt to resolve this issue for this user, Windows 8 is a complete disaster and I wish to high heaven we consumers had the option to choose either Windows 7 or Windows 8 when purchasing a new device with Windows on it. I absolutely DESPISE Windows 8! I would rather have Windows ME instead of the disaster that is Windows 8. It is the most user unfriendly OS to ever exist.
I have updated to Windows 8.1 which allowed me to install a shell that acts like Windows 7 and gives me a 'start' button. Although the shell is a HUGE improvement, it still does not cover up all of Windows 8 such as the annoying Charms thing AND I cannot get Windows to start on the shell desktop. But it's still better than not having a shell at all.
Microsoft really blew it BIG TIME with Windows 8 and this will be the very last Windows device I will ever buy unless Microsoft gives consumers the option to choose which OS they prefer. I have a Windows 7 micro-tower PC which I will keep until it is no longer supported and as for the Windows 8 laptop I'm using right at this very moment, it will ONLY be used when I am not near my PC. Eventually I will become an Apple consumer just to avoid Windows 8 and any future MS OS like 8.
