Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
Dear Shenan Stanley, There is of course an element of guesswork in that figure but bear in mind the problem is global. But, for heavens sake, we must concentrate on keeping this disaster in the face of MS and not be diverted by trivialities. The fact that they ignore questions on this subject is truly disgraceful (they have failed to respond to 2 letters I have sent to Reading and London)

I would say he said it based on frustration. I would have thought you would want to help instead of question his numbers? I know some of the fixes with the charms bar and each system is different but MS truly has done a terrible job of helping its customers through their own bad choices.
I remember when I was getting frustrated when I tried to X out a window the charms bar would pop out.. Seriously who in Gods green Earth would trigger a charms bar in the top right corner where users are constantly closing out windows or minimizing them? This is so laughable I think the folks at Apple must love to see MS shooting themselves in the foot like this..
I for one was a huge MS supporter but I had so many issues with Windows 8 sandbox that I moved back to Windows 7 which is a great OS! For my next laptop however I am getting an Apple because holy **** did I waste more hours of my life with more issues than I could handle.
