Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
How about if all your programs worked flawlessly in Windows 7. I am talking compatability mode **** and not drivers. Then lets say you put the same programs in Windows 8 and you happened to have major issues, crashes, hanging, WiFi issues with multiple routers and adapters... Would you keep using Windows 8 or would you go back to Windows 7?
I think Windows 8 has its market with certain people. But man Windows 7 for my business just hums. I get stuff done... I am downstairs in my man cave pounding away working on my business. I really just need to smash that laptop with a Bat and replace it with a Windows 7 or Mac. I am thinking MAC in this case because then I would have a killer desktop running windows 7, a stable laptop running MAC, and an Android phone to go mobile.... Then on my business side my whole data center runs in Linux.
I wanted to make Windows 8 part of my life but it is too much work for anyone to try and understand how bad things went with me. Although they would probably learn where they may have cut the cord to so many programs that worked well on all earlier operating systems.
I reinstalled so many times and would try to figure out where it went wrong... Sony VAIO has spent many hours on my computer running scans of everything and telling me the computer is very clean but they cannot understand what is happening themselves. Would be a great case study for MS to look at if they wanted to understand how they can strengthen the kernel because it should be much more fault tolerant than it is.
What I really love about Linux is that if **** does not compile properly then it just plain wont work. However when you compile it properly it juts works and it does not quit or hang on you. Windows has done a terrible job of this through all of time and Windows 7 is the winner of all the OS they had... But they really need to handle instability rather than blame third party.
If third party software is going to pose a problem to the kernel in a way that will make the kernel unstable then the kernel is not doing its job of protecting us from all the mean bad third party software companies who MS blames for all their shortcomings.
I just wish it would be more of a "it worked in our lab with amazing results" to a "please all users participate in helping us make this better. Tell us what you really like and hate about the OS and lets build something together the generally fits everyones interests.
I would have been the first person to say "Hey guys when I try to X out my window in the top right corner there is a very small overrun where my mouse passes the X and wont click it... I notice then when I move back to center over the X a side menu pops out blocking my access to close this window and its very annoying" and "Hey guys when I scroll from left to right on my touchpad this menu pops up when I am trying to use the touchpad to navigate my desktop" or for the one they have not provided a solution towards... "Hey guys, I love the little show desktop in the bottom right corner but again if I over run it with my mouse and slight come up then the menu pops up" aka charms bar...
I would have also given a long list of programs that crash frequently and worked great in the past. They could figure out... Oh shoot there is something the developers need to know they are missing with this new Win8 sandbox we are releasing...
Instead, they just do things how they think are best and leave all the blame to fall on the developers whose code ran great on previous OS's while all the time saying you can use your older programs with compatibility mode.
That would be specific to the APPLICATIONS (APPS) - not the operating system. (... saving as they go along ...)
