Old Title: when I move the mouse around the right hand side bar keeps appearing, when I don't want it to.
I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 and have managed to work with it OK. The thing is that when I move the mouse around, the right hand sidebar with the Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings buttons (and the date and time, bottom left), keeps appearing. It is so frustrating as I keep having to click to get rid of it. Ironically, when I am ready to close the computer down, I have to fiddle around with the mouse trying to get the damn bar to appear so that I can get the settings button to shut it down. Are there any solutions for this?

OMG, when I pay hundreds of my hard-earned dollars, especially in this economy, I expect to customize my product after purchasing. Did Microsoft have regular people try Win 8 for awhile before releasing it?
Got it!!! Its simple, go to control panel, synaptics touchpad and disable side swipe function, simples. it was really beginning to annoy me.

Microsoft has designed it for making things faster and easier. The charms bar help you do the things you do most often, like search, share links and photos, connect devices, and change settings without any difficulties.

This issue was driving me crazy with my new week old inspiron 7720 windows 8. I even spent time on the phone with tech support who suggested using an external mouse. I followed your suggestion to disable side swipe function and it worked perfectly. Thank you.
The issue here amongst those speaking out is accidental bumping of Charms. 1st, you have to really need to be going that tight to the right corners or side...
There is an option box check / uncheck under Navigation tab Rt Clk Taskbar to Properties that changes the behavior of Charms
It won't be so touchy anymore

You will be much better off with a Mac. I got mine a few months ago and have been very productive since.. Every once in a while on a mac you do get the spinning circle but if you do a restart it takes about 15 seconds to return to login screen and you are back running strong... It is the most stable computer I have ever used. The trackpad is designed so well and works like a "charm" no pun intended to MS. Also the keyboard feels and types very well. There is only one company making Macs and they did it right. Windows is made by so many different companies using so many different hardware configs that you dont really know what you are gonna get... There is one constant however and that is that Windows just plain sucks after Win7...
I bought my wife a PC a few weeks ago and she got so aggravated that I returned that to Best Buy and bought her a Mac. She loves it as well and life is now restored to normal...
I used to trash Apple and Mac without ever trying them out.. After dealing with so many issues on Win8 I just could not take it anymore so I made the switch and I will never go back...
One thing however is I do have a Windows PC in my downstairs office.. I love that system because it is running Win7 and I have an 8 monitor setup running (4) 128GB Solid States in Raid0 with 64GB Ram and 12 physical cores but 24 showing with Hyperthreading.
That was a $6000 build and I love that Windows PC... But yeah Windows 8 was a joke and they should make charms disabled out of the box rather than subjecting users to it and having them all pissed off searching for ways to disable...
One last note is that after I disabled charms bar I still found that the OS sucked and crashed all the time. Just look at Event Log on a out of the box PC after one week and it will be riddled full of errors.
There is one exception however. Shenan Stanley does not have any of these issues. Windows 8 runs super perfect for him. Unfortunately, we are not as cool as him so we have issues or in my case HAD issues. Go Mac... No pun intended Shenan.. I just had to throw that in there in friendly banter. I know you are a well educated smart individual but we just disagree strongly on this topic.
